Household income

About this topic

Household income shows the combined gross income reported for households. Because households are the common economic unit for sharing housing and living costs, this topic is widely used in socio-economic analysis.

This topic helps indicate economic resources, but income is not the same as wealth and can be strongly affected by household composition, retirement, and labour force participation. The dollar ranges are shown for the latest Census year only, so household income quartiles are more suitable for comparisons over time.

Interpretation notes

  • Total household income combines gross weekly income reported for the household and is affected by how many people contribute income.
  • Because it is not adjusted for household size or composition, it should not be treated as a direct measure of living standards.
